Hello musics and nature adorers!

Daphodil Music are proud to have collaborated on another exciting musical project with Deeside Schools on their excellent 2023 eco film titled — ‘A World Full Of Wildlife (and how you can protect it)’, inspired by another of ultimate climate warrior author Neal Layton‘s books, of the same title.

A World Full of Wildlife was another Wirral Film Premier, we have been so fortunate to once again be part of a fantastic echo-film collaboration between Deeside Schools, bringing Neal Layton’s book of same title to life. Explore the amazing web of life on Earth, biodiversity in all its form and what you can do to protect it!

Composing the theme song for A World Full of Wildlife was enormous fun! Neal Leyton’s book has so much information in it, it is always a challenge to convey it all in song form, but we are so happy with how it turned out and the children sang it so beautifully and joyfully, which is what Daphodil Music is all about!

Our favourite way of raising awareness, creating change and mobilising people into action is through music and song, and we hope you enjoy singing along and thinking about the important message of this song.

Hello music lovers and climate warriors!

Daphodil Music are proud to have collaborated on another exciting musical project with WIRRAL IN THE SUNSHINE on their fantastic 2022 film titled — ‘A Climate In Chaos (and how we can help)’, inspired by the book by the ultimate climate warrior author Neal Layton, of the same title.

Composing the theme song A Climate In Chaos was such a privilege and so much fun.

The verses and the bridge sections are spoken rhythmically, because rap is such a powerful songwriting tool for conveying urgent messages. And climate change is a hugely important and urgent issue! The bridge also has a little nod to recent speeches made by another notable climate activist, can you guess who*? (scroll all the way down to find out)

Our favourite way of raising awareness, creating change and mobilising people into action is through music and song, and we hope you enjoy singing along and thinking about the important message of this song.

One of my favourite aspects of music is creating. Composition and Song-Writing are such an amazing creative outlet and I enjoy both creating and inspiring others to express themselves through original music making. I love writing songs for children to sing and enjoy, and always incorporate this into my music teaching.

Winter Music

Hello Musicos! Before spring gets here, here is some Winter Music inspo for you.

Recently, I wrote and composed five original songs for a KS2 stage adaptation of Shakespeare’s The Tempest, and took inspiration from a wide range of genres – from Film Music, to Pop, to Musical Theatre. Can you hear the inspiration behind each song?

These songs were so much fun to write!

The play is full of magic, mystery and intrigue. It also deals with good verses evil, anger verses forgiveness, darkness verses light.

The Island Won’t Forget. This is an introduction song, hinting at something sinister on the horizon coming to invade the tranquil, magical island where Prospero, his daughter and lots of other magical beings live.

Where Is Everybody. This song depicts the mounting chaos and confusion that ensues after the royal shipwreck.

Though Liest. The song is all about the darkness now descending on the island and everyone on it, due to past evils resurfacing.

Pray You Now. This song is about Prospero’s internal contemplations, the thoughts inside his mind. He considered whether he should forgive and forget the past wrongs made against him. The music is inspired by the Elizabethan style of music, which was the contemporary popular music during Shakespeare’s lifetime.

Lastly, Epilogue. This song is a retelling of all the lessons learnt throughout the play. There are many Shakespearian paraphrases as well as quotes from the original Epilogue from The Tempest. It also includes one of my favourite Shakespeare quotes (taken from a different play, but still!). The quote goes: And If Music Be The Food Of Love – Play On!

Next, winter music – some old instrumental compositions of mine:

While training for my Dalcroze Eurhythmics Certificate (dalcroze), over 10 years ago now, I composed Icy Snow 2. This is an instrumental piece to go with Plastique Anime choreography, where each instrumental part is followed, interpreted and depicted by a different performer through creative movement.

Creative Challenge: You can choose a part and try to follow it while dancing or moving creatively!

Soon after that, I wrote two more compositions: Rain and Bronzalactic. These pieces were inspired by a compositional tool called ostinato (and in plural ostinati), that uses short repeated patterns.

Creative Challenge: Compose a piece of music and use repeated musical patterns (ostinati) throughout your piece.

Remote Choir Tracks

Since March, it has sadly not been possible to sing all together in groups and choirs. BUT that doesn’t stop true music and singing adorers! The internet has been abundant with so many wonderful examples of how music can bring people together, even when they are physically apart. All you need is a backing track, a pair of headphones and a way to record yourself singing from home and – a virtual choir is born!

Here are some of the tracks I have put together during this time, homages to the wonderful music of The Beatles, Leonard Cohen and Kacey Musgraves! The vocal tracks I made were what the singers followed, and the remote choir tracks are made up of recordings made by the singers from their homes. Technology can be such an incredible tool. All singers in KS2.

Singing will get us through these hard times! Sing safely, sing joyfully, and share it with someone you love.

Hello music and planet lovers! We hope you have been safe and well during this very strange time. Remember, music and singing are proven to make you feel happier and healthier, so we hope you’ve been doing lots of those recently.

This year Daphodil Music has had the privilege of collaborating once again with WIRRAL SCIENCE UNDER THE STARS on their 2020 film titled — ‘A Planet Full Of Plastic (and how we can help)’.  This is a unique conservation film about reducing the use of single-use plastic, inspired by Neal Layton’s book (affiliate link), which shares the same title.

Musical Bumps: Pregnancy Musical Sessions in Crouch End, Spring/Summer 2014

Sing to your bump and newborn – join the musical fun!

Daphodil Music is launching “Musical Bumps” – a series of sessions for pregnant women who would like to add more music and singing into their daily pregnancy routine. It is widely thought that vocalising and singing to your unborn baby is extremely beneficial for you, your baby, your partner and the early bond you are creating with each other. An unborn baby’s hearing begins developing early and is fully functional by the third trimester, so getting comfortable with singing and communicating verbally with your baby can never start too early. It is also an amazing and essential skill you will take forward after birth and throughout parenthood and a great way to cultivate your baby’s musicality and love of music. Plus, it’s good fun!

The sessions will include learning a variety of songs and ways of vocalising that can be used ‘in utero’ as well as after your baby is born, getting comfortable with using the voice to communicate with your bump and newborn, listening to a range of calming music from different genres while rhythmically massaging your bump and exploring different gentle soothing sounds for you and your baby to enjoy together.

The sessions will be held in Crouch End by Daphne Sarnat, a fully qualified music teacher and certified Early Years Music practitioner (and also in her third trimester at the moment).

Times and dates TBC and can be suited to participants’ preferences.

Daphodil Music Choir Performance – 16th June

Don't Forget Them

The Daphodil Music singers will have their first performance on Sunday 16th June 2013 at 1pm outside the Crouch End Old Town Hall, as part of the Crouch End Festival Family Day Picnic.

They shall be singing a selection of songs from both The Extinct Animal Songs project and The Magical Creature Songs project.

We are very excited to introduce The Magical Creature Songs Project – Daphodil Music’s second singing project. This project is all about… yes, you guessed it – magical creatures.
